A one-day workshop where you will receive a comprehensive introduction to the craft of blacksmithing. While forging fire tools and coat hooks, participants will learn the basic techniques of forging and will take home their own hand-made and functional forged wares. Students will learn detailing techniques and will be able to personalize their pieces to their liking.
Expect a full day of detailed instuction and practice in this intimate, 4-student, class. Prepare to be on your feet for the majority of the day, with a break for lunch.
Students are advised not to wear synthetic clothing, and leather aprons and work gloves are encouraged. Eye protection will be provided and is to be worn at all times. Students will be required to sign a safety waiver before the workshop begins.
$205.00 + HST
$25 material fee to be paid to the instructor on the day

Introduction to Tool Steel; Forging Bushcraft Tools

Instructor: Graham van Houten
In this one-day course we will cover the difference between steel alloys, and the theory behind the hardening/tempering process. We will start by forging a pioneer style flint and steel kit (tin included). Students will then move onto making a simple yet highly versatile tool; the stitching awl.
You will be guided through the forging process, and be free to personalize the tools to your taste.
Expect a full day of detailed instruction and practice in this intimate, 4-student, class. Prepare to be on your feet for the majority of the day, with a break for lunch.
Please wear non synthetic clothing, and leather aprons and work gloves are encouraged. Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. Eye protection will be provided and is to be worn at all times. Students will be required to sign a safety waiver before the workshop begins.
