Introduction to Hand Embroidery

July 16 @ 9:00 am - July 17 @ 5:00 pm

Join instructor Bozena Hrycyna of Kosa Kolektiv & Folk Camp Canada in a weekend of immersion into the world of hand embroidery, learning the basics of counted embroidery and tasting a bit of freeform too. The workshop is designed for beginners and will focus on learning best practices and gaining general familiarity with various materials and techniques used in embroidery. We will focus on cross stitch, back stitch and running stitch, working on linen and/or cotton aida cloth following a geometric pattern to begin. The second part of the workshop you’ll be introduced to some freeform techniques such as stem stitch, split stitch and chain stitch, as well as satin stitch, which can be used to beautifully depict any drawn form. You’ll be introduced to the traditional motifs of natural forms such as the ‘tree of life’ and its variation- ‘the flowers in a vase’. Your pieces can form the basis of a little pouch, pillow or book cover or be incorporated into a larger piece (shoulder bag) or garment at a later time.
