Willow Basketry; Small Round Rope Coil Basket (one-day class)

October 23 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

In this one day class you will make a small, round rope coil basket.

Ropecoil is a unique and beautiful weaving technique that uses small willow (or other similar material) that is twisted into a single strand and then woven as one element.

This class is open to anyone ages 16+. No previous weaving experience is required.

Through making these baskets you will learn:

  • 3×3 slath bases
  • twining
  • the rope coil technique of weaving
  • 3 behind 1 or 4 behind 2 borders
  • material selection
  • proper hand positioning

We will be using cultivated basketry willows grown in Ontario by Lakeshore Willows. However, the techniques that you will be learning can also be used with wild willow, dogwood, or any other found woody materials that have the same long, flexible characteristics.
