Hambone Body Percussion 101

One-day Workshop

Saturday September 7 (9:00am – 4:30pm)

Instructor: Teilhard Frost

To begin, Teilhard will demonstrate and talk about his collection of non-electric instruments and their history. This includes fiddles, banjos, harmonicas, rhythm bones, jaw harps, kazoos, spoons and the hambone. Following a short Q & A session, we will learn the art of the hambone, a type of body percussion. We will work on the basics and gradually lead into some more complex rhythms.

After lunch, we will start with some stretching warm ups and get on our feet to learn some basic Appalachian style clogging. This style of dance is fun to do pretty much anywhere; walking to the store, dancing to the radio in the kitchen or on the dance floor at a party. The basic idea is the same as walking but with a little extra pizazz. We will then continue with the hambone, learn more complex rhythms, add some singing and put together a routine.

This workshop is suitable for ages 10-110
