Introduction to Beekeeping

Two-day Course

Saturday July 20 – Sunday July 21 (9:00am – 5:00pm both days)
Rain date: Saturday July 27 – Sunday July 28

Instructor: Charlotte Doyle

This two day course is designed to teach new beekeepers everything they need to know to keep bees successfully including: basic biology, equipment options, seasonal duties, pest and disease control, legal responsibilities, and honey harvesting.

The weekend will include a blend of classroom learning as well as hands-on learning in bee colonies. This course is applicable to those curious about beekeeping, new to beekeeping, or experiencing challenges in their current beekeeping. No prior knowledge is required.

While beekeeping includes a great deal of (often non-ergonomic) heavy lifting, we do not want to promote barriers to this hobby based on physical ability. There are many ways in which beekeeping can be accessible, and these can be discussed during the course. We will be in and out of the classroom, and standing/squatting/bending over are often part of the hands-on process. Being stung is a reality. If there are concerns about accessibility, we will come up with a plan so that nobody is prevented from accessing this material or experience.

Equipment: We suggest that you bring your own veil and hive tools. However, if you are taking this course for interest sake only and do not look forward to getting bees of your own, we can provide these for you. Please let us know if you do not plan to bring your own veil and hive tools so that we can be prepared with this equipment.

Rain date: Saturday July 27 – Sunday July 28 (9:00am – 5:00pm both days). Because a significant part of this course takes place outdoors, we ask that you keep these dates open in case of cancellation due to weather. If the course is moved to these dates due to weather, resulting in an unsafe learning and working environment and you cannot attend on these dates you will not be granted a refund.

Fresh, homemade lunches and a morning snack/coffee are included both days. All dietary needs accommodated.
