Meet instructor Božena Hrycyna (@thisfolklife) B Meet instructor Božena Hrycyna (@thisfolklife)

Božena will be with us next weekend teaching the following two embroidery classes.

• Introduction to Counted Stitch Embroidery on Saturday Dec 9, 1-5pm

• Introduction to Free Form Hand Embroidery & Rushnyky on Sunday Dec 10, 9am-5pm

Božena grew up surrounded by the rich embroidered heritage of her Ukrainian-Canadian community and was mentored by her mother, an avid embroiderer. She has absorbed a deep appreciation and love for all things embroidered, with a particular interest and excitement for traditional garments. In her personal practice she has sought to deepen her knowledge of Ukrainian folk patterns and techniques, and has been fortunate to have received mentorship from master fibre craftsperson & artist Myroslava Boikiv (now in Canada) and continuous inspiration and encouragement from friend and artist Yura Rafaliuk (Ukraine).

She is director of FOLK CAMP (@folkcamp), an organisation connecting people with the folk arts, crafts, music, and land based traditions of Eastern Europe in the Canadian context. As co-founder of the Kosa Kolektiv, she has collaborated with many talented and skilled artists, musicians, and community organisations in Ontario and across Canada to promote the richness of Ukrainian and Eastern European cultures, and to facilitate meaningful connections for people (cross-culturally and within their own lineage).

Božena is an amateur singer of traditional village songs, embroiderer, pysanka maker, weaver of threads and grasses, and textile craftsperson. She holds these crafts dear and is actively learning and sharing these artforms from her Ukrainian/Ruthenian heritage. She has taken workshops and travelled extensively in pursuit of deeper understandings of these and other folkways.

Find out more about these upcoming courses on our website at www.thecordwoodstudio.com or link in our profile.

A reminder that we do have bursaries available to those who wish to take any course with us but find the registration fee prohibitive.

Come dive into the beautiful world of stitching an Come dive into the beautiful world of stitching and adornment for a full-day course on Sunday December 10th, from 9am-5pm. We’re hosting an Introduction to Free Form Hand Embroidery & Rushnyky - Ritual Cloths
, with instructor Božena Hrycyna. @thisfolklife

Božene grew up surrounded by the rich embroidered heritage of her Ukrainian-Canadian community. She developed a deep appreciation and love for all things embroidered and is particularly interested and excited about making traditional garments and ritual cloths (“rushnyky”). In her personal practice she has sought to deepen her knowledge of Ukrainian folk patterns and techniques.

This day-long immersion into the tradition of rushnyky is designed for beginners and will focus on learning best practices and gaining general familiarity with various materials and techniques used in embroidery, and specifically stitches used for rushnyky made with drawn forms.

You’ll be introduced to some freeform techniques such as stem stitch, split stitch and chain stitch, as well as satin stitch, which can be used to beautifully depict any drawn form, and are used to “draw” organic forms onto the cloth (namely flowers, birds, vines).

We’ll look at the traditional archaic motifs of natural forms such as the ‘tree of life’ and its variation - ‘the flowers in a vase’ which are characteristic of the rushnyky from the central and eastern (Leftbank) parts of Ukraine.

This class is suitable for ages 12+.

To learn more about this course head to our website www.thecordwoodstudio.com or link in our profile.

A reminder that we do have bursaries available to those who wish to take any course with us but the registration fee is prohibitive. Just ask us about financial support.

A chilly dilly night. Sorted for freezing, drying A chilly dilly night. Sorted for freezing, drying and fresh for tartar, vinegretas and borscht.

These hardy shoots amaze me every November. They were covered on the last few nights that dipped below -5 but some of the outer fringes were showing signs of stress so we harvested the lot before it was too late.

What are your favourite dill recipes and how do you preserve this herb for the winter?

My favourite new trick is to make a dill bouquet, fill a yogurt container with a couple inches of water, place the bouquet in it, cover with a plastic bag, tie it off and freeze.
