Round Willow Handbaskets
2-day Workshop
Saturday July 29 & Sunday July 30 (9:00am – 5:00pm)
Instructor: Johnny Suderman
This is a two day class for adults. Although this is a beginner level class, it’s important that you have had an opportunity to work with willow before, or are otherwise confident that you have the strength and mobility to work with your hands physically over this two day course. (See Disclaimer at bottom)
The round willow handbasket project will allow all participants the opportunity to get a feel for basketry willow in longer format, and to learn many techniques that are fundamental to making a strong and durable basket. We will be learning round bases, pairing, three rod wale, randing, and more advanced border techniques. Handling techniques will be demonstrated for participants to try on their own. Time permitting, we will be able to install foot borders on our baskets and get a second chance to practice our border technique, while adding a replaceable protective wear surface on the bottom of our work.
Medium sized (10-12”) handbaskets are the focus for this workshop, but the techniques that will be taught are applicable to many styles of baskets. In this class we will be using cultivated basketry willows grown in Ontario, however the techniques can also be used with wild willow, dogwood, and other found woody materials that have the same long, flexible characteristics.
DISCLAIMER: When we work with willow we are essentially braiding with wood. Wood is a dense material. Please consider how a day of repetitive twisting of your wrists, and pointed pressure with your fingers will leave you feeling at the end of the day. Please consider that if you have difficulty working with your hands for long periods of time that this class may not be right for you.
