These delicate, stackable baskets are unassuming at first glance. However, they offer a unique project that incorporates a lot of exciting concepts (square work, small willow, split willow, lap project, yes please!).

The split willow makes for a clean and inviting interior, while using a fraction of the materials that would typically be used. All of the weavers in the basket are quite small so they soak relatively quickly and do not require large soaking tanks or huge wait times from start to finish. If you are looking for a willow weaving project that can be adapted to small working spaces or with minimal investment for materials, this is a great project to learn.

In this course you will learn how to make simple square bases with a reinforcing edge weave to lock the weave in place. You will learn how to insert stakes into your base, and weave a three rod wale. Side weave will be done with split willow prepared by Johnny, but there will be a demonstration to show you how this is done. Borders that will be taught are the 4 behind 2 border or the trac border, depending on how much time there is at the end of the day.

Tools will be provided, but if you have any of the below listed weaving tools feel free to bring them. 
– Awl (1/2″ thick for a main awl or 1/4″ for smaller work)
– Sharp pruners
– Rapping iron
– Sharp knife (Ie. an opinel or mora)
– Measuring tape

Take home kits will be available after the class for you to continue your practice if you wish.

Disclaimer: This basket is more delicate than most however, weaving with willow can be physically challenging and require moderate hand strength. Please consider how a day of repetitive twisting of your wrists, will leave you feeling at the end of the day. If you have difficulty working with your hands for long periods of time this class may not be right for you.
