Timber Framing

Learning Time-Honoured Timber Framing Principles

6-day Course

August 5-10 (9:00am - 5:00pm each day)

Instructor: Jason Gibson

*THIS COURSE IS FULL*

In this 6-day course participants will gain the confidence and skills to build their own timber frame. Learning these time-honoured skills and techniques is an essential component in building a traditional timber frame structure.

Students will learn to work from a set of drawings while participating in hands-on training as they work together to construct a 16’ x 20’ timber frame structure, with loft.

This course will cover traditional mortise and tenon joinery, layout and cutting procedures, assembly procedures, proper use of hand and power tools, and safe raising/rigging techniques.

Students will apply theoretical and practical skills while working together.

The frame will be constructed out of 8″x 8″ pine timbers. This is the most common size used in modern timber frame construction. The beams will come directly from the sawmill. Students will then layout, cut, and assemble sections of the frame.

Basic woodworking knowledge is beneficial but no experience is necessary.

All tools will be provided by the instructor. Students are asked to bring work boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, a 25′ tape measure, and a 24″ framing square.
