This two-day course lets you explore wet felting at your own pace, whether it’s your first time or your 15th. We will take time at the beginning of the first day to discuss projects and goals.
You can expect to proceed with one of the following approaches:
- Plan and discuss your project and break it into stages to work through.
- Choose a collection of fibres, whether it be by colour, origin or feel, and let them take the lead.
With either approach, you will be able to explore a variety of natural fibres and other materials, have the time to really practice, feel and see the process; make design decisions as you go and come away with a truly unique and imagined piece.
This two-day format suits larger or more intricate pieces, or multiple projects. It could also include making felt fabric on Day 1 and then cutting and sewing a project on Day 2.
To get your creative juices flowing, here are some examples of 2-day projects:
- Large piece of fabric or Wall hanging (play, design, choose your fibre palette – the options are endless)
- Smaller piece of fabric on Day 1; Pattern drafting & sewing on Day 2
- Large cowl (integrates a joining felted “seam”)
- Bag/Purse with pockets (integrates felted “seams” to make a 3-dimensional shape)
- Vessels of various shapes or sizes (touches on more 3-dimensional sculptural manipulation)
- A custom piece (tell me your idea prior to that class and we’ll make it happen!)
The process of wet felting is simple in its setup, materials and resources required. However, the understanding and nuance of the felting practice is not so simple. It takes time to learn and understand the laying out of fibres, feel the tactile clues the fabric is giving you, see the changes in texture and density of fibres as you work through the process, and learn how to incorporate decorative elements into the design of your textile.
This course is suitable for beginner or experienced felters, ages 14+.
Please note: wet felting is physical, where each step takes time and a certain amount of excursion to get to the next stage. You will be on your feet for the better part of each day.
