Winter Tree ID and Drawing with Natural Pigments

Winter is a beautiful time of year. Without leaves, a tree’s bark, buds and branches stand out. It’s a great time to notice their patterns. Join us to learn the basics of winter tree identification. We will look closely at buds, branching patterns, bark and any other clues we can find to ID trees. After lunch we will sink deeper into our learning by taking the time to make some notes and draw the trees/notable parts we saw using books and samples collected during the walk. Are you not much of a drawer? That’s OK! This practice is not about perfection, but about learning to notice and remember details about the trees around us.

Participants will make charcoal for drawing and be invited to use natural pigment paints made by Sammy who will speak about how they are made.

What to bring:

– Yourself dressed for the weather. We will be outside for about 1.5 hours, snow-or shine.

– Notebook if you have one. Thick, blank paper is recommended. There will be extra watercolour paper available.

– Your favourite tree books, if you have some
