Spring is around the corner, and so is lambing sea Spring is around the corner, and so is lambing season. It’s time to separate the rams and the ewes. Just another sign of the seasons changing. What a great time of year!

WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT! To mark the change of seas WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT!

To mark the change of seasons we’re hosting a two-day Spring Talisman workshop with Božena Hrycyna (@thisfolklife)

Here’s a summary of what the course will look like.

DAY 1 (March 18 from 3-5pm)
Making natural dyes from organic ingredients. While sharing bits of her journey re-discovering this integral part of pysankarstvo, Božena will offer insights and encouragement for participants to begin their own journey of making pysanky dyes collaboratively with their natural surroundings.
She will then get started, teaching the process of inscribing the egg with designs to experience the miraculous birth of a pysanka. Pysanky (plural) are talismans imbued with symbols of protection and goodwill, and making them is a ritual act, a meditation.

DAY 2 (March 19 from 10am-4pm)
Participants will continue to practice their pysanky techniques, using the wax-resist “batik” method, in which designs are drawn or written onto the egg with beeswax, and then submerged in a series of dye baths.
Božena will also introduce the “travlenky” etched Ukrainian egg. Travlenky are created by applying wax designs on eggs and then etching away the unwaxed areas using an acid solution, most commonly vinegar.
The final step in the talisman is the pavuky-himmeli mobile or straw prism “pavuk”, used to trap the bad energy and release good energy into the home. This craft harkens from Northern and Eastern Europe and can be found in most places where grain growing (and straw) is a key component of people’s lives. Traditionally, these web-like mobiles bring good fortune and blessings to the home. Experience the golden light and sacred geometry as you work with the simple gifts of wheat and rye straw, linen thread, and beeswax.

It’s refreshing having something to harvest in t It’s refreshing having something to harvest in the winter when a thick blanket of snow still covers the garden soil. Every willow whip will get clipped (below snow level) and sorted based on colour and size. This patch has served us well but this year we will be digging it up and planting its offspring cuttings in a new location, out of the vegetable garden. It is taking up prime real estate and does not need the protection from deer, at least we don’t think so (fingers crossed). We will also be planting cuttings that are longer than the initial 6” ones that we planted 6 years ago. That way we won’t have to be digging down into the snow at harvest time to find the main stalk. You can see in the video I am pointing to the original cutting and how far beneath the snow it is. We think 2 foot cuttings should do for the amount of snowfall we get here. Learning the ropes as we go and doing what makes sense, to us.
Looking forward to weaving some small baskets with our March break campers.

We are excited to be offering our first youth-focu We are excited to be offering our first youth-focussed programming here at The Cordwood Studio, in just two weeks!
March Break Youth Camp, for ages 9-14.
March 13-17 (Mon-Fri), from 10-4 each day.
Our goals are to expose our campers to new crafts, teach real life skills and have a blast outdoors.
We have planned a week full of varied arts, crafts and skills that will be taught by local artisans and experts. Campers will take part in a two-hour instructed session each morning and afternoon. They will learn a skill (or two, or five) and make a project to take home each day. Here’s what we’ll be getting up to…

DAY 1
Lino Block Printing
Shelter Building

DAY 2
Crocheting
Willow Basket Weaving

DAY 3
Creative Writing & Poetry
Stencilling & Henna Tattooing

DAY 4 (MORNING & LUNCH IN THE SUGAR BUSH)
Outdoor Games & Boiling Sap in the Sugar Bush
Illustration

DAY 5 (MOST OF THE DAY IN THE SUGAR BUSH)
Macrame
Orienteering
Fire Building
Maple Syrup Finishing

Campers will also get to spend time in the kitchen, cooking and baking together and helping to prepare lunches and snacks.

There will be a few other guided mini-sessions and a ‘craft corner’ where campers can choose to spend their free time before and after lunch each day. This time can also be spent outdoors playing games, building shelters, or practicing other survival skills.

It’s going to be fun!
